I started a painting of the Channel Islands at sunset but it was blah. Then I decided to make it a sunset looking north at the mountains instead of south at the ocean. I've painted many sunsets so that was fun. Then I added some stucco houses with red tile roofs and a rare flat ocean. The landscape section is a warm dark tone with the sun only on the side of the houses. The lesson: decide on historical accuracy versus capturing the essence of the location.
